The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is advancing plans to build a new leisure centre and associated block of flats.

The plan forms part of the council leader’s anti-austerity drive to build new housing and improve services.

Now it is on the hunt for a contractor to demolish the existing St George’s swimming pool building in Shadwell to make way for the new leisure centre and an eight-storey block of 29 flats on the site.

Both the leisure facilities and residential accommodation will be owned and managed by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Applications for the two-stage design and build contest need to be returned by 12 February with an appointment of a builder expected to made by 25 May.
